August 8, 2005 - Mahi Mahi, King, & Spanish Mackerals
Today was the flattest I've ever seen the Gulf of Mexico. To give you an idea of how flat...I was able to run 40 mph while I was 20 miles off shore in my little 18' Mako (powered by a little 90 hp merc).
Anyways, the seas were so pleasant we made a day of it. We fished 4 different rigs in the range of 20-22 miles offshore. From the rigs we were able to get a 35" King, 2 Spanish Mackeral in the mid 20's, and a Mahi Mahi around 28". The fish were caught on Spanish Sardines.
Surprisingly enough the Mahi Mahi was spotted on our way back in, around 11 miles offshore. Birds were hitting the water and it was bubbling from the school of Mahi Mahi hitting the baitfish. Unfortunately we were only able to get one of them to bite.
I'm embarrassed to say though, that the first ever Mahi Mahi on my boat was caught by someone other than the captain. Hats off to you Michael on a great catch (you're lucky I didn't make you swim back).
I guess sometimes luck is better than skill.
